Color markings

In this standard, resistor values are represented by colored bands. The order and colors of the bands define significant digits, the multiplier, tolerance and, for six-band resistors, the temperature coefficient.

MIL standard

In the MIL marking standard, the resistor value is encoded using three or four digits. The first two or three digits represent the significant value, while the last digit represents the multiplier.

For example, code 103 means 10 kΩ, while 2211 means 2.21 kΩ.

IEC standard

In the IEC marking standard, resistor values are written using the actual value and an appropriate unit symbol. For example, 470 Ω is marked as 470R, while 220 kΩ is marked as 220K.

Decimal values are represented by moving the unit symbol between the significant digits. For example, 0.10 Ω is marked as R10, while 5.1 MΩ is marked as 5M1.

An additional letter can be used to specify tolerance, such as J, K, F or M.

EIA-96 standard

In the EIA-96 marking standard, the first two digits represent an index into the E96 preferred value series, while the final letter represents the multiplier.

For example, 02 represents the second value in the E96 series.

EIA-96 markings are primarily used for precision resistors with a tolerance of ±1%.
